How did the Carolina Cup begin?

After the successful completion of the 1999 North Carolina State Championship we decide to take a break from all the planning and organizing that goes with a large competition. Watauga Gun Club would be the new host of the state championship for 2000 and we would just go up the mountain and help out.

But that was not to be the case; Mike Oberman suggested that The Range needed to hold a major event in the year 2000 and it could be called the Carolina Cup. We toyed with the idea and got input from several of our most trusted stage designers having learned a long time ago that stage design is the KEY to all great matches. We also asked our outstanding Safety Officers if they would be willing to work another big match.

Kelly Howard had been helping out with scoring our monthly matches and had developed a way to score a large match that was simple, quick and flawless. He was also playing around with building a web page and added that we could use the internet to offer applications for the event and created the tag East Coast Championship.

In 2009 we held the 10th Carolina Cup. We are very thankful for all the support from the shooters and the shooting industry. Without you we would not be one of the largest IDPA competitions in the world.
